  • THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA by Judith Kerr prompted our #bookishplay this week.
📚🌈
We received this gorgeous little tea set for my daughter’s 1st birthday and it’s been in regular use since!
🙌🏻
Watching the way she PLAYS and interacts with the set has been an absolute joy to watch.
💛
Tea time is play time where many LANGUAGE and SOCIAL skills are practiced.
👍🏻
Invite some stuffed animal friends along to use as an opportunity to model MANNERS as you say please and thank you and offer your guests some tea to enjoy.
😊
I also love this set because you can use WATER to make the whole experience a little more engaging. What kid doesn’t LOVE playing with water! To manage too much water spillage I only fill the pot with a TINY amount.
😉
THE TIGER WHO CAME TO TEA is a delightfully quirky story about exactly that, a tiger who arrives at a little girl's house and crashes her and her mother's tea party. This story is super cute and will most certainly make you GIGGLE as you read along and drink your tea!
🍰
After reading and playing help your little one make TEXT TO SELF connections by discussing how your tea party was SIMILAR and/or DIFFERENT to the tea party in the story.
👍🏻
Did you have a TIGER come to tea??

  • Let’s stretch our children’s imaginations by reading aloud WITH them daily.
🗣
Let’s take them to NEW places and help them experience new things through the MAGICAL world of books.
✨
The more children read, the more they start to think CREATIVELY and CRITICALLY.
💫
Reading also helps develop children’s (and adults) WRITING SKILLS as their imaginations get excited and stimulated by new concepts and ideas.
📝
So keep up those read alouds with the OLDER kiddos too as it’s the perfect catalyst for inspiring writing as these skills become increasingly more important as they grow.
👍🏻
Sharing BOOK TALK about the ideas presented in a story during your read alouds is the perfect way to help develop their creative thinking and writing skills!
🙌🏻
Do you agree that reading makes us better writers? What’s a childhood picture book you remember vividly sparking new and exciting ideas in your brain?
  • We stopped at a USED bookshop on a recent road trip and picked up some classic goodies.
📚
I love finding new GEMS that I maybe wouldn’t have otherwise come across in a shiny new book store.
🙌🏻
Don’t get me wrong I LOVE a new bookstore but also really appreciate the novelty of a used bookstore knowing that others have appreciated and loved a book I buy.
👍🏻
Great quality literature (which absolutely includes PICTURE BOOKS) stands the test of time and is forever enjoyed by the young and old.
🤗
Little Miss made herself right at home and got nice and comfortable while I browsed.
🙄
What’s one of your favourite classic picture books you still love to this day?
💛
Do you like visiting used bookstores?
💛
  • What do you do when your little one has a PROBLEM? Do you jump in straight away? Do you wait and see how they go about it before offering a solution? Do you ask them how they would solve it?
🤔
Problem solving is an incredibly important LIFE SKILL.
✨
Life is about problem solving. How we go about solving our problems has much to do with our ATTITUDE and how we perceive things.
🌿
WHAT DO YOU DO WITH A PROBLEM by Kobi Yamada provides such a wonderful perspective on facing our problems head on and the learning that occurs through this process.
💛
Through pain and failure comes GROWTH. A message we need to all come to understand and accept.
💛
Next time your little one has a problem, give them some SPACE to figure it out on their own before jumping in too early even if it’s as little as getting a cap off a pen or a little bigger like a dispute on the playground.
✋🏻
By all means LISTEN and chat about it but try and refrain from offering solutions TOO quickly before they have had the opportunity to think about it for themselves.
👍🏻
This month over @kidlitpicks the theme is PERSEVERANCE so be sure to share your favourite #picturebooks with the tag #kidlitpicks_perseverance and head over to

  • Farm days twinning with my mini me.
👶🏼👩🏻
We had our first farm visit and loved every minute.
🤗
We spotted cows, pigs, ducks, goats and lambs, jumped in giant piles of corn and bails of hay, we flew across zip lines, drove tractors, went on a train ride and more!
🐄🐑🐖🐐
It’s something I’ve been meaning to do for ages and just hadn’t gotten around to it yet. Highly recommend it as a day out for the family. So much outdoor fun!
🚜
The funniest part was when we were looking at the pig and her piglets and they were all snuggled together sleeping. The mother did the biggest toot and scared her little ones awake and my daughter starting laughing like crazy...I think this may be the start of potty humour!
🐷😂
Have you been to a farm with your little ones? If so, how did they like it?
  • Sharing with you today one of my all time FAVOURITE board books for #bookishplay Friyay.
📚🌈🙌🏻
Numbers and opportunities for counting are everywhere you look and books like TEN LITTLE FINGERS AND TEN LITTLE TOES by Mem Fox make it easy to incorporate into your READING ROUTINE.
✋🏻🤚🏻👣
Practice counting to ten or twenty forwards and backwards.
If your child can count PAST 20, extend them and start to look at groups of 5 and 10.
✖️
My favourite page is the last and ends with three little super adorable kisses on the tip of the baby's nose. ☺️
For a little extra #bookishplay after reading the book we traced my daughter’s hands and feet and we used them to help us count to 10.
✋🏻🤚🏻
Ask your little one to fold the fingers as you count.
👍🏻
Having tangible materials such as these cut out hands is so great for learners as it engages them in a tactile way with the learning and it feels like play!
🙌🏻
For super little learners ask them to pick up the hands and feet to start to learn the different NAMES of these body parts. For older children you could start to look at the concept of LEFT and RIGHT.
✋🏻🤚🏻
I love this book for the many ways you can use it to help develop LANGUAGE and NUMERACY skills in a playful and interactive manner.
🗣
Hands up if you have this book in your #homelibrary 🙋🏻‍♀️

  • Hanging out in bed after nap time.
😴
I’m becoming increasingly aware of my little copy cat observing EVERY.SINGLE.THING I do on a daily basis and have noticed her copying even the not so nice things I do...like when I recently used the back of a library chair to crack my back and then she went and did the exact same thing! Not so sure I want her seeing that BAD habit...
🙄😂
Modelling the BEHAVIOUR we want to see in our children is the best way to develop positive behaviour and this is true also when it comes to READING.
📚
I’ve been experimenting with independent AFTER nap reading time where I read and give my daughter a book.
👶🏼
So far we’ve been able to do it (for about 2 min ☺️) with some playful interaction but I’m hoping with persistence we can extend this time.
🙌🏻
My hope is that I show her reading is an enjoyable activity and something I choose to do in my ‘down time’. And it’s nice to sneak in a page or 2 (if I’m lucky!).
🤗
What have you done that your mini copy cat mimicked?
📚
By the way finished THE SUBTLE ART OF NOT GIVING A F*Ck and loved it. Straight to the point, humorous, and a good read.
👍🏻
  • I’m so in love with the whole Learning Gardens series and TRAFFIC JAM by Aino-Maija Metsola is no exception.
🚛🚎🚗🛵🚲
These books were first introduced to me as a gift from my mother in law and now we’ve been lucky enough to receive Traffic Jam in our THINGS THAT GO @bookieboobox bitty box.
🙌🏻
A fun and engaging puzzle board book that looks at different types of vehicles that helps you explore the concepts of being ‘IN FRONT’ or ‘BEHIND’.
🚗🚌
It’s also great to use for practicing comparative language of size such as ‘the car if BIGGER than the bike’ and the car is SMALLER than the bus’.
🚎🚙🚲
The PUZZLE pieces come out and you can put them all together in one long row to compare the SIZES of the vehicles from smallest to largest and then flip them around to sort from largest to smallest.
🚌🚛🚗
I love this type of book for little learners as it gets them MOVING and gives them something to hold onto and PLAY with while you read along.
🚙
Having a TOY or another BOOK for your little one to play with during a READ ALOUD is good for their BUSY little bodies and minds that just want to be exploring ALL.THE.TIME.
🤗
Hands up if you’ve got a little one into Buses, Cars and Bikes at the moment?
🙋🏻‍♀️
#bookieboobox #bookieboocrew
  • Ain’t that the truth?!
🤪😂
My patience with regards to sleep has been tested the last few weeks as my daughter has transitioned out of her cot onto a floor mattress.
😴
It’s something I’ve been wanting to do but just hadn’t gotten around to it until she managed to get out...REPEATEDLY (40 times in a row to be exact).
😳
It’s been trying and tiring and has really tested my PATIENCE to say the least.
🙄
Most nights (and naps) have been a struggle and I have had to continuously remind myself that this is a really BIG DEAL for a little person.
😴
I have also had to remind myself that our bedtime stories are PRECIOUS and to enjoy the moment without thinking about what’s about to come when it’s time to say goodnight sleep tight.
😬📚
Patience is a virtue and something we need to reach deep within so we can best assist our little ones during these challenging transitions...oh and a nice glass of wine once they’re asleep helps too!
😴🍷
How did your little ones go with the transition from cot to bed?
